Hot Topics January 2013

60 members braved the weather on Monday evening to hear Melanie Monaghan from Merton Young Carers, our chosen charity this year, tell us about  work that they do, and that we will be supporting.

This was followed by an entertaining and informative talk by Detective Chief Superintendent Darren Williams, Merton Police Commander, who, amongst other things, reminded us that we should never hesitate to dial 999  if the need arises. He  also told us that there is an opportunity for a member of the public to ride out in a patrol car each month. Any volunteers??

Prison Food!

clink-1Twenty or so fresh inmates lined up by the gates of the prison.  Shivering in the cold, grey damp air, nervous anticipation spread quickly through the ranks.  The prison warden eyed us grimly as we proffered our photographic identification – numbers were issued, and hung round our necks, mobile phones were confiscated till our release.  I was number 9 as the first 15 of us were marched through the gates on the way to Clink.

Across the exercise yard, through the automatic doors which locked shut after we passed through and we were in a holding bay waiting for the next set of doors to open.  We were famished as we anxiously awaited the rest of our group to join us.  Would they all behave and conform, and if not, it didn’t bear thinking about.

Our  leader, Agnes who had obviously been in some kind of gangland fight earlier, was calm and in control as she led us on  to the prison refectory and the much awaited meeting of our fellow lags.

After having been warned about what happens if you grass up in the Clink, I will skip the interim passage, suffice to say, we served our time and were freed to leave and join the outside world.  Am I a better person for the experience, yes.  Can I honestly say that I won’t go back – no.  I bonded “in there” and if my ladies go back –  I’m going with them.

September 2012

74 members and 7 guests were thoroughly entertained by award winning author, Robert Goddard, recounting how he became a writer of best selling crime mystery thrillers. Many of you bought his books to keep you occupied now the nights are drawing in. Enjoy!

Robert Goddard’s publishers gave 10%, or £50 donation to our WI.

A letter has been received from Faith in Action, to thank us for the money received as a result of our fund raising efforts. It is available on the notice board if you wish to see it.

Robert Goddard kindly drew two names from the bag for the Denman College Bursaries.

The winners are Sheena Peckham and Louise Greenwood, who both receive £250 towards the cost of any course at Denman College that they choose to attend.

Big Walk/Little Splash

Thank you to everyone who has filled out a form for this. We now have almost 70% of members involved. It would be wonderful if we could get all members included since we will be judged not only on whether we have completed the mileage but also on how many members have participated.

July 2012

78 members and 3 guests attended on last Monday at our craft based evening, and thank you to our members who demonstrated the art of lace, and card making. We also had beading, and Boots no 7 consultants who gave make up and skin care advice, and provided us with ‘goody bags’, containing samples. Social and committee members provided cakes for sale.

Cliff Rich and Tracey Leighton from Contact the Elderly also came along to talk about how they support local older people who live on their own and who are often socially isolated. Their idea is a very simple but effective one. A group of volunteer drivers use their cars to collect the same local older people on the same Sunday of every month and together they visit a local volunteer host for tea and an informal social afternoon. The group visits a different host each month and arrive at the host’s home around 3.00 pm and leave again around 5.00pm. This monthly outing with friends is something the older people they support look forward to with great pleasure and for many the outings are a lifeline.

The charity is currently planning to launch a new group in the borough of Merton and is therefore looking for volunteers and older guests to join the group.  They were extremely grateful that quite a few members signed up to volunteer, and if anyone else is interested in volunteering as a host twice a year, a driver for the group once a month, or a reserve driver to drive when needed then they would love to hear from you.

Olympic Pennants

June 2012

94 members and 10 guests were present on Monday evening to hear Baroness Hollins enlighten us about her role in the House of Lords, and give us an insight into the checks and balances of legislation. She was then kind enough to answer a number of questions from members.

Congratulations

Our congratulations go to Wimbledon WI member Rosey Hickson, who has been awarded the British Empire Medal, in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. Rosey received this for Services to the Community in Merton.

Wall Hanging

Completed embroidery panels were displayed for the Wimbledon contribution to Surrey Federation Wall Hanging, and members asked to vote for the one they would like to submit. The one chosen was designed and produced by Dulcie Edwards. Thank you to all the other members who submitted their work, these will be used to produce a Wimbledon WI banner or tablecloth.

Raffle

Our Raffle raised £300 for our charity Faith in Action, and all who contributed vouchers and gifts will be informed and thanked. Thank you all for your generosity in buying tickets, and if you didn’t win this time, there is always next year!

April 2012

83 members and 3 guests enjoyed our evening with The Greensleeves Morris Men last night!
We learned a little about the history of Morris Dancing, were given a demonstration and then had the opportunity to have a go. Photographs were taken, and there may be something published in the local paper.

Surrey Federation Annual Council Meeting

Lesley attended the Surrey Federation Annual Council Meeting, and the Chair’s Report, and the Financial Statement are both available on the notice board. Unfortunately, no one from Wimbledon won a bursary for Denman College, but we will be awarding our own, later in the year.

Resolution
The Resolution that members have chosen to go forward to the AGM is as follows:
“The NFWI calls on the Government to increase investment in the training, employment and retention of midwives in England and Wales to ensure services are adequately resourced and are able to deliver a high standard of care.”

Delegates will vote on whether the NFWI should pursue this as a campaign, and at the next meeting you will be asked to vote on whether Wimbledon WI supports this. Your decision will then be forwarded to the Delegate to vote on our behalf. More information can be found in the April issue of WI Life.
